New Product Development Assistant

Oriental Merchant is a leading importer and distributor of authentic Asian groceries, supplying supermarkets (Coles, Woolworths, independent grocery stores) with brands (such as ABC, Lee Kum Kee, Valcom, Yeo's) that are familiar throughout the Asia Pacific. We are proud of what we have achieved in growing Asian food categories in Australia where we have a presence nationally, as well in New Zealand, Europe, Canada, Japan and the UK.

Please note that this role is an admin/office based role not involving developing new products from scratch. Oriental Merchant is a wholesaler and distributor of foods and a fundamental part of our NPD is ensuring the foods we import are suitable for the local market.

Being comfortable in the kitchen, cooking a variety of foods (and being comfortable taste testing different food products) is advantageous.


Your New Role:

  • Preparing cost analysis on new products and ensuring all costs are identified and recorded accurately.
  • Research and compile information to evaluate price competitiveness
  • Identify opportunities across current portfolio to improve costs, performance and convenience
  • Ensuring all requirements are met as per the NPD process from concept to launch
  • Managing product database including product spec sheet
  • Data entry/ Product setup of costing and specifications
  • Research, identify and evaluate new product opportunities from market research, sales information, emerging trends and data analysis to drive category growth and portfolio diversification
  • Facilitate range reviews including preparations of samples, presentation, first order etc.
  • Assisting sensory evaluation
  • Provide ad hoc support around office as needed


What You'll Need to Succeed:

  • Full-time Australian working rights;
  • Preferably with Diploma or Degree in Food Science related fields;
  • Australian Driver's Licence (necessary);
  • Administrative experience / data entry skills;
  • Project management experience;
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and deliverable dates;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Exposure to FMCG environment is desirable;
  • Experience dealing with factories and suppliers in overseas countries would be advantageous;
  • Familiar with Food Quality Standards and related legislation is desirable.
